... I am pretty sure the cracking sound cam from the speaker...
Of course the sound came from the speaker!! Where else could it come from? The speaker is reproducing whatever the amplifier sends it.

Cracking definitely sounds like the amplifier is limiting in some way. Current limiting sounds worse than voltage (clipping) limiting.

Depends on the programme material, unless you’re listening in mono.
… or did you mean top and bottom on one side?
Bitd it was always clipping - unless it was the cartridge mistracking… |

KEF used Bostik 4141, a white water based adhesive which dried clear, for dustcaps, bitd. |
