Cracking definitely sounds like the amplifier is limiting in some way. Current limiting sounds worse than voltage (clipping) limiting.

Depends on the programme material, unless you’re listening in mono.

… or did you mean top and bottom on one side?

Bitd it was always clipping - unless it was the cartridge mistracking…

I've never tried MEK as a CA killer. I think the commercial CA de-bonders are mostly acetone.
