Since finding a replacement B200 SP1076 for one badly damaged in my pair of 105.4's seems almost impossible I'm wondering if I can get away with a SP1070, which IS available. Apparently came out of a 303.....

NO, the SP1070 is different, the SP1076 is 4 ohm and the rubber surround is different/bigger. I thought the same with the B200G SP1075. But you will get other problems. Best is refurbish your damaged speaker, there are companies who are expert in this. Witch country are you living?
And do you have a picture of the damaged speaker?

It's a heavy damage, but i think it is fixable. I will send this picture to a proffesional speaker repair shop here in the Netherlands, and we will see his reply. http://www.speakerreparatie.nl/speakerrep.html

And does this unit works ok, i mean, does it function normally, no funny or strange rub sounds?

It actually works well. It just sounds like the bass is weak compared to the other speaker, which is fully functioning.

Lesser bass is caused because the air is slipping away throught the crack. The 105.4 is a closed system and should be airtight! So if you (carefully) push 1 woofer the other must stay to the outside, if it returns immidiately to its start position, then you have a leak. You must also replace the rubber surround tape on the back of the speakers (i used draught tape) and also the metal piece where the electrical conducter is mostly is not airtight, i did mine with silicone, its now almost 100% airtight, i think 99%. I can feel my chair if i play on a normal volume and with a good recording.

I just called Audiolab and they said the following:
Remove the unit from its housing.
Then on the front put a tape, scotch magic tape, on the front on the damaged part. This is necessary to hold the 2 parts together.
Then on the backside of the unit glue the crack with 2 component gleu and let it dry. (use glue special for pvc etc, otherwise you can have problems and make it worse!) You can now remove carefully the scotch tape on the frontside.
If you want it perfect bring it to a special speaker repair shop in your country, they can make it almost invisable.

The 104.5 is worth to repair, it's a hifi classic.

Thanks so much for all the time you have spent on this. I will check on the speaker repair shops near me here because it is just too hard to make the repairs you mention...the tear in the speaker is exactly behind one of the speakers ribs, so access from the back is quite difficult. And I agree that these speakers are worth saving.

Earlier KEF loudspeakers used PVA damping, I have no reason as to why this should not be any different for the damaged unit. I certainly would use some strong self adhesive tape for the initial repair though... Good luck!

Now I've found an B200 SP1075......would that work to replace a 1076? Certainly looks the same...came out of a model 203....

according to this great bit of info I found, the 1075 is 5ohm while the 1076 4ohm. My question still stands though, as I am no techy by any stretch of the imagination....

Repair your B200G SP 1075, it's the only way to bring the 105.4 on its original factory level. I,ve already discussed this, because i also want a set for reserve and speakerguru, who worked with kef, learnt me that you must only put in the speakers with the right parameters designed for the speaker system, otherwise you will get a different sound.

The SP 1075 has also a different/ smaller rubber surround, the SP 1076 is specially designed for the 105.4, here a picture.
