Am I the only one who thinks 5.5k is a snip for a limited edition vintage pair of speakers? I'm sure there are plenty of more expensive paintings, vases, stamps, coins, etc.,etc.... |

Having replaced the surrounds on our limited edition KEF 104.2s and more recently on another pair (not limited edition) I'd still day no. Even if the 107.2s did not have foam surrounds. _________________ I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a

The thing that would worry me is paying a high price and then discovering the surrounds (ferrofluid?) needed replacement with all the hassle that involves. |

I fully concur! Limited edition or not, sadly they do die gracefully... _________________ I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a

Such a pity because they are so superb. Kef took their own path to try and keep as much of the BBC 'sound' and low colouration heritage as possible (head assembly v/s 3/5a) while exploring physics to dramatically increase sound output and power handling with the coupled cavity, constant 4 ohm impedance etc.
Strange the coupled cavity was eventually dropped? Maybe because the drivers needed low moving mass and high compliant surrounds for low res freq that paper/foam was the beast way of doing it? But the foam surround has it's own downside.
I think marketing trumped physics to some extent, you can't SEE the value of drivers hidden inside the box, rather than an impresive line of drivers on the baffle from bottom to top? |

I could not agree with you more!
Years ago when demonstrating some large Tannoy monitors the guests were most impressed with the way that Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take Five’ sounded. That is until I took the grille off… One shrugged his shoulders and said to the rest of the group, “Huh, it’s only got one loudspeaker!” Similar comments have been heard in local Hi-Fi shops when looking at KEF UniQ LS50s, Q300s etc. Perhaps they ought to start putting on the baffle fake drivers like Amstrad did on some of their products all those years ago? _________________ I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a

Thanks, hee, hee... I remember those, with a cheap plastic vanes moulding above the cheap paper drive unit, and when you bent down and looked at the right angle there was no diaphragm and just baffle underneath!
Amstrad also put a dolby button on their decks, that had no dolby circuitry, just put a single rolloff cap in circuit.
And on the Apprentice we are supposed to look up to Sugar as some kind of grandee... |
