Has anyone built or owned speakers made from concrete?

I thought about that and was wondering if any one had any experience!
I want to make some flat-sounding monitor stereo speaker set, with a load of tweeters, I think I just have to make the moulding for it!
I was also buisy with the thought of having some speakers straight in the wall, while I am building my house now!

Apart from the John Crabbe B139A bass horn the Tip-Top (HI-Fi News October 1967 & November 1967, copies from M. Jones, Falcon Acoustics), no.
The Bassett/Coffin sub-woofer performed just as well i.m.h.o.

Construction of a speaker in a wall is rather limiting in design terms if you want to modify the system, so go for an extension at right angles, or in a corner, so it can be removed or altered.
Concrete block was the favoured material for KEF Cantata kit btw.
I imagine a pair of 104 kit baffles would also benefit from this type of construction. |

Not concrete, a friend not too far away did have some cabinets built in marble by a local firm which make household fittings in the material.
It was only the B200 & T27 partnerhip. I cannot remember but the crossover was probably a standard KefKit item.
They did sound a lot cleaner and VERY fast! 
Alas, no experience with concrete.  |

| The Swedish Rauna models are all in concrete, I used to listen to the smallest model at the repairshop, very clean sound. Backbreaking to move.. |

Hard to see how boat hull or ferro cement methods would be used for speaker enclosures. In this design frames are built to shape and bridged over by wire lath or expanded metal. Render ( the concrete) is applied by one plasterer inside and one outside pushing the plaster against each other as it comes through the mesh.
Suppose it could be done if top or front baffle were left open. Shuttering and pouring/vibrating seems easier. For some strange reason women don`t like concrete speakers.........and yet they like the houses made of the same stuff |

They don't generally try to move the house to hoover under it...

Excellent . Look like they are poured? Have seen poured ones before. Concrete is beautiful stuff that can be worked into all shapes.....even when it is green. Lots of nice links and stuff there Colin. |
