Have you tried contacting a KEF dealer?
My local one is excellent.

Many thanks for advice.

Have just purchased 2 x R1548X from KEF UK and they have advised that they are the only available/stocked replacement. Fingers crossed that they will do the job!

Total price £43.41 including carriage and VAT.

Has anyone ever tried a non-KEF tweeter besides the T33 in this system? It's too bad the T52 won't drop right in there. No offense to anyone, but I think the T33 ruins an otherwise decent speaker. The T33 is a nasty, harsh, spitty little beast...IMO.

An update on the effectiveness of replacing T33 in 104/2 using R1548X. I have a pair of R103/3 and I'm basically happy with these, except that the bass output is somewhat limited. I noticed a pair of 104/2s on eBay and managed to buy them for a reasonable price. Unfortunately both HF units had been destroyed by overheating. I replaced the T33s with R1548X from KEF (see my posting of 18 October 2005). At first I was pleased with the results, and didn't mind too much about the cost of the new HF units. I decided to sell the 103/3s. I set up both 103/3 and 104/2 in the same room to demo to a prospective purchaser, and I realised that the treble sound was different. The original T33 in the 103/3 sounded smoother than the new part in the 104/2. Of course, the 104/2 had way more bass. In the end I sold the 104/2s and kept the 103/3s. Maybe I'll look out for another pair of 104/2s, or maybe I'll just get a sub-bass unit and some R102s.

For background, please see my posting of 22 March. I sold my 104/2s with R1548X for £350. I though this was reasonable considering that they were not quite in original condition. Subsequently I spotted a nice pair of bi-wire 104/2's on eBay with an irresistable 'buy it now' price. Fortunately I have a very understading wife. The new 104/2s are far better than the repaired speakers or the 103/3s. I'm very happy with this purchase. I'm now dubious about the R1548X as a T33 replacement.

Hi,

Yesterday i ended up in the same situation as several of you already are in. A dead T33 SP1191, only this time in a KEF 107.

Just to get the status:

Did any of you replace a T33 SP1191 with the SP1548 (or SP1548X), and if so what was the outcome ? What was the sound like, and did it change after the unit was broken in ?

Did any of you use the VIFA MG27 ? I have searched for the VIFA unit, but it is discontinued, so it is probably not a solution anyway.

If i go for the SP1548 (or SP1548X) i most likely will replace both units.

Your response will be appreciated.

best regards

Ragnar

Hi,

I contacted KEF the other day, to see if they had a replacement for my dead SP1191. The replacement was R1549X, and they did only have 1 on stock. Worse than zero !

Anyway, i have been looking for a pair of R1549X's, and i wonder if there are any of you guys that have been in the same situation, and replaced an SP1191 in a 107 cabinet with a R1549X ?

Also, if anybody has replaced the SP1191 in the 104 cabinet with a SP1548, to get an update on the result. How did it sound ?

Thankful for all comments !

Ragnar

Hello,

Look up HiFi World magazine, there are usualy a couple of places these tweeters can be serviced or rebuilt by.

I intend to have my own re-built some time soon, they sound a little dull and rough at very high frequencies.

I also want to buy some WBT terminals, though have not found a UK supplier.

Might be a problem over shipping, as Ferrofluid (because of it's flammability) is classified as "dangerous goods" just like cluster bombs Rolling Eyes .

So surface mail following UN packing regulations (item packed in a sealed container within another sealed container), might be your only option.
