Parts does have some very good points!

However, I tend to get fatigued listening to overly analytical speakers and prefer something that I can listen to for hours....

Gimmie KEF!!

Cool

If all CDs were recorded properly then the prpblem would not be as bad.

You will find that CDs are ‘Processed’ and ‘Compressed’ in many instances.
Stuff that claims to be “Digitally” remastered is actually sonically ruined!

They sound AWFUL because they have been ruined by pony tailed self appointed mixing engineers with acute deafness and no idea as to what dynamic range is, and more…

There is plenty out there, but try here: http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?p=91

And if you have time and good eyesight here: http://www.stylusmagazine.com/articles/weekly_article/imperfect-sound-forever.htm

Whilst we are seeking ever greater fidelity, marketing morons are using gadgets like OPTIMOD to take the recording quality in the opposite direction.

So monitors like the bright transparent Yams would sound much worse than nice smooth KEFs, Rogers or BC1s!

The Times had a good article recently: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article1878724.ece

Does my head in this Hi-Fi business… Twisted Evil

Yes I agree totally, some cds are unlistenable.

There is too much "processed" recordings about that it
makes Hi-Fi a deviation from the " real live " recordings.

Its frastrating that I tend to now listen to unplugged or
live versions if I can find them, even then some of the
unplugged versions are highly processed.

I quite like listenning to spanish live flaminco tracks as the
majority is pure live recordings.

Yesterday I was watching my TV with a modest £100 yamaha
sub and satelite side speakers and somehow it sounded
better than my "hi-fi" set ! - there was bass and the detail is
quite remarkable. It was the soundtrack from Blade at the end
of the film. HOW is that possible ???

wow, i didn't realize i started such a hot topic.

first off, Alexander, the pic you posted was of the NS-10M, not the NS-1000M. i think we can all agree that the NS-10 is a wretched POS Wink

here's a pic of the NS-1000M:
http://www.niji.jp/home/k-nisi/ns1000m-h.jpg

i dig both my Calindas and the NS-1000M. the NS-1000M are more revealing and accurate units, but this is not to say that the Calindas suck. they are just different.

the yammies are extremely fast and transparent. they mids and highs have an almost (and i mean almost) electrostatic transparency. but with more balls and higher spls. as far as their sound, they spit out exactly what you put in, for better or worse.

I've only heard them with my restored vintage McIntosh MC60 tube amps. they sound SMOOOOOOTH!

the Calindas actually have better high frequency response (the yammie tweeters roll off slowly at 15kHz - very gradual though). the T27 in the Calindas extends to like 30kHz. the yammies are very forward and tight. they have a HUGE sound stage.

the calindas don't really sonically surround you, but have far better imaging thanks to the narrow baffle and the fact that dome mids just don't image all that well in comparison.

in the end, i think the yammies are superior, but I'll still NEVER sell my Calindas Smile

see ya,
Robby

from your description you tend to emphasise more on the yummies
than the calinda......................so we know which you prefer Evil or Very Mad

Very Happy

they are great spaekers, and mint ones are hard to find now.

Robby

And sometimes it's the record company and / or the artist who insists on this ..... errr, mastering, if I can call it that.

I am a member of SteveHoffman.tv - check out the forum there! It's pretty friendly.... and a lot of this type of stuff is discussed there.

Steve Hoffman is the guy who did all (or most of) the mastering for the DCC catalogue including the gold discs. In my opinion, they are better than the gold MFSL discs....

If I may be permitted.... here's a fun thread over there...

Slightly off topic, but...

I travel on business, I need something to play CD's through on my portable computer, all computer speakers suck so....

I now hook up a pair of Yamaha studio monitors, which include amplification, they sound great, a million times better than Bose stuff...

There's a model 50 and model 80 (from memory), the more expensive model 80 is better because it generates some bass, whereas the 50 you need to buy a subwoofer which brings price above a pair of 80's.

So for anybody into ipod/mp3/etc., don't waste money on iPod etc. speakers, get some amplified studio monitors, and Yamaha have excellent price/quality.

well, it's been some time since i've posted.

after listening to the NS-1000M non-stop since i posted this topic, i got a bug up my ass to throw the Calindas back in the loop.

They are like a long lost friend Smile

here's what i hear from comparing the two for while.

NS-1000's strengths against the Calindas:

HUGE soundstage
near ESL transient response
Music surrounds you
awesome midrange
bass is tight
fairly efficient - 90db

Weaknesses after throwing the Calindas back in the mix:

the NS-1000M are pretty poor imagers. the Calindas trump them quite easily with their narrow baffle and still quite dynamic T27 tweeter.

in fact i forgot what decent imaging was until i fired up the Calindas again. the NS just throw a vague wall of sound at you (common with dome mids?) - hard to place instruments. i think the mids have the vocals bouncing off everything in the room too. quite maddening in retrospect Wink

the NS are much more dynamic but the Calindas create a nice little "musical package" sounds very balanced. bass on both speakers is just satisfactory as far as extension. i use a REL Q100 sub - so all good there. the REL mates better with the calindas too. more equal sensitivities.

the HF roll-of of the yamaha tweeter becomes apparent when you put the T27 back in the mix. again, we are talking 15khz roll-off with still lots of info to 20khz - but the T27 goes clear out to 30khz and sounds effortless.

so, this is why i keep both speakers (and my vintage JansZen Z-200 ESL hybrids). speakers are like instruments - each have a different take on the music

If those named "experts" could listen to some famous speakers REALLY not knowing what they were listening to... it could be very funny!
