I have a pair of Cadenzas bought in 1976 which are still in excellent working order. They are mounted on 4in-high stands. Though I love them dearly, they still have, to my ears, a fault that can become annoying: a slight muddliness in the lower register, with a lack of definition and occasional boominess in the extreme bass.
While this may be due to using them in too small a room (23ft x 15ft x 9ft high) or with inferior cables (about 15ft of ordinary bell wire), a friend told me that (1) updated crossover units would solve the problem, and that (2) such units are commercially available – but I've forgotten where, and he has since, inconveniently, died. Are either or both of these statements true? Where can I find updated crossovers? If available, are they difficult to fit? And will I notice the difference? |

I can't answer your questions directly but one thing you need to be aware of is that the capacitors in your original xover are long since well shot. 10-15 years max KEF told me then you must replace them.
So fitting a new xover will, if nothing else - fix the above.
Cheers,
Bob. |

Have you got the Cadenzas spiked? Also sit the spikes on a concrete block or similar. This will tighten bass and give increased clarity. You will be amazed.

I'm not convinced you need to change the crossovers but they are not expensive and it could be worth a try. You will be able to buy them from Falcon Acoustics. See 103 or perhaps even better 103aB on the price list. For another 3GBP the aB provides the Acoustic Butterworth improvement. See it mentioned under the KEF 104aB on this site. I suspect however that spiking is what you require and you will hear a dramatic improvement as long as your source and amp are up to the task.
