Hi and welcome,
Model 104 had a very low impedance over a small frequency band at crossover. There was a dip to below 3 Ohms (resistive part) around 3 kHz. This can cause the 405 to current limit at high level. If it happens it is obvious. The power amp output bounces between the rails making a nasty sharp cracking noise. It is not subtle. A deaf man could hear it!
Changing to 104aB and/or 405-2 fixes the problem. OTOH if you don't play so loud, forget what I said and don't worry about it. |

Thank You for the info.
The 405 is refreshed (critical parts) and to me works just nice.
I forgot to say..
What You think about Hafler? |

I had a great respect for Hafler products here in the UK.
This was a great many years ago, sadly I have not seen any Haffler equipment for a long time, my last contact was with the very popular Hafler Pre-Amplifier made in the 1970s.
The Pre-Amplifier in question was the utterly sweet sounding HD-101.
A glorious beast in those heady days with oodles of information and dynamic headroom, lovely! _________________ I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a

It works just fine but only thing I found bad in this combination is that You can't turn the volume up properly because it becomes so loud very quickly (first quarter of knob).
English amp & American preamp...
Thanks for Your post.
Cheers. |

Alering the gain should be quite easy on one of the units, or an in-line attenuator perhaps? _________________ I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a

A 3V up to 14V pre output is not good for the 0.5V Quad 405 maximum input for full power, no wonder there's no control over the volume! _________________ This post or any other information supplied to this website or any other by myself is not available for any form of commercial purpose i.e. to hi-fi magazines or as sales and marketing material for sleezeBay or Audiodogging pimps and the like. |

OK.
So, what is the best thing to do?
Thanks for Your attention on this matter. |

Make up a stereo pre to power lead with a 1350R component in series with the signal and a 150R from signal to earth for 20dB attenuation.
Or stick in the 405 input or stick in the Hafler output.
You'll need 5% (or better) resistors for each channel as you don't have a balance control. _________________ This post or any other information supplied to this website or any other by myself is not available for any form of commercial purpose i.e. to hi-fi magazines or as sales and marketing material for sleezeBay or Audiodogging pimps and the like. |
