After being incredulously open mouthed about the GB story unfolding today Shocked I turned to more important matters Smile and noticed this BBC monitor used at Radio 2 for the Jeremy Vine show:

http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/video/national/videonews/99660/

go right to the end of the video and pause as GB leaves the studio in a huff in the last few seconds.

At first on the TV I thought it was a Harbeth Monitor 40 but was confused by the "circular" (what looks like) ?alu? plate around mid and tweeter flush with the baffle. It does not look like diffraction foam because screwed to the baffle around its edges. Finding this video on the net I also noticed the ring around the bass unit and the driver mounting screws do not match with Harbeth.

Does anyone know what this model is please?

Tricky!

It looks like a Harbeth 40.1 clone/prototype/one off?
The bass unit dust cap is quite different and of course there is that metal plate...

I've emailed the studio and Harbeth but am not expecting much, nevertheless fingers crossed.

NOT a Harbeth! Reply from Harbeth this afternoon...

"This is not a Harbeth built speaker and I am sorry but I do not know who it is made by (although I do have my suspicions)."

Hmm, I’m surprised at the silence here, the echo is quite prevalent of an empty room… I have had another communiqué from Harbeth regarding the mystery Harbeth ‘Copy” at the BBC R2 Studio. I’ll not spoil the suspense as the chief man may be putting his views to me next week when he returns from the extended business tour. In the meantime any more guesses? I’m assured that the ‘Monitor’ in question never came from Harbeth!

the only guess I could come up with for something with high power handling for pop music but still lowish colouration to satisfy the BBC would be ATC but I haven't looked at their range for years and it is just wild conjecture.

THe drive units are not ATC, witness the mid-driver. One guess made by a person at Harbeth suggested Dynaudio.

now that could be a very good guess, since their very last monitor (which was not really an in-house design) used dynaudio drive units I seem to remember. The LS5/12 was a private project which they later modified and accepted, but I never liked them much, they really lacked the midrange magic of previous generations.

I'm told that there is a reference to this item on their forum which I have just joined, but there is a lot to trawl through.

yep, a trawl through their website came up with it:

http://www.dynaudioacoustics.com/Default.asp?Id=534

that metal plate turns out to be a rotatable baffle for sideways placement - remember the Ref103 - nothing new under the sun? Smile

What a shame that BBC research dept which changed the face of loudspeaker design worldwide is no more, perhaps reminiscent of the whole country's lack of investment and innovation turned into worthwhile industry.

thanks for the help Smile

How sad that the BBC are not supporting the indigenous home industry.
I'm fully aware that they have used other 'Monitors' than just BBC designed models in the past and still do, but this day and age…

I have a great respect for Dynaudio loudspeakers but much more for Harbeth, what a crying shame. As you say the country is reticent to be as forward looking as in the glorious past.

The guys at Harbeth are quite Pi**ed off about this slap in the face, maybe the Dynaudio goes louder in order to please Mr Evans when he is in residence?

Do you remember the "I'm Backing Britain" slogan of 1968? http://www.sterlingtimes.org/memorable_images33.htm

well said. I remember the campaign but we couldn't have it nowadays because so little is actually made in Britain anymore Sad

Absolutely, the Dynaudio must cost a fortune too, so why they can't support Harbeth which is probably better quality anyway is shameful.

Bloody accountants running things instead of engineers probably Twisted Evil
