These bulletins are very informative and everyone interested in loudspeakers should read these from BBC website.
One thing cabinet construction bulletin, as far as I remeber from 1977, does not adress is that thin wall damped construction is not too good on dynamics. You can imagine same issues are present on mk 2 conversion on 105. Mk. 1 had propably better sense of dynamics in lower register due rigid woofer mounting and mk 2 has less colouration on upper frequencies, but less dynamics in low register due compliant mounting of B300.
There are also quite odd research issues present on BBC website. I do not know why anyone would be interested how to modify cheap drivers intented for transistor radios for better performance. Improving good drivers for better performance woud be OK, but buying proper drivers is propably more cost effective than trying to improve inferior drivers. |

I would suggest because the whole BBC philosophy in those days was to broadcast the highest QUALITY possible to do justice to the artists.
One aspect of this was to have the highest subjective quality monitors - to judge what they were broadcasting (as commercial designs of the time were not up to the job according to the programme producers).
But another aspect was that a tiny proportion of their listeners had comparable high quality systems and the vast majority of their listeners must be using small tranny radios. Therefore anything that could improve quality here while being cost effective was surely worthwhile? |
