Hi all, is my first post! Very Happy

i bought my first kef recently, 104
i like the sound and i decided to buy from the bay a 104ab crossover
as soon as i installed in one of the 2, to make a little comparison, i notice something sounds strage... woofer from the upgraded speaker move too much, also the cone was moving...
i investigate and i notice i have a "fake" pair of 104.... infact i don't have the classic B200 1039, instead i have a 1054... (from Kef Calinda i suspect)

now honestly i think they don't sound bad... but of course i can't make any A/B comparison, but i see here there was a couple of post with people using that woofer instead of the regular 1039 one...

now or i will look for a pair of woofer or i just will buy with no hurry an other couple of Kef and i'll do an A/B comparison... but if u have some experience about that "strange mix" please let me know
cheers

I cant make a comparison but it does seem Kef, at that time were making speakers to fairly exacting standards with regard to crossover/speaker/cabinet interfaces so I would try to get them back to being original...... welcome to the forum Smile

SP1054 is the Calinda woofer. Both units have similar Theile-Small parameters, hence similar box size and passive radiator to Model 104, but the 1054 has a long coil in a short gap and the 1039 has a short coil in a along gap. Their "inductance" in the midrange region will be be very different and so the 104aB XO will not work as intended.

Good luck with your search for SP1039.

Not included in my "list of spares" but if deep88 or any other member really wants a free pair of SP1039s slashed at a party (I obtained them for their voice coils) and repaired with gaffa tape as >95% fully working approximations you'll have to be prepared to make a small detour from J14 M6 to collect them.

Having cooked a 1039 a few months ago, I got a replacement pair on a well known auction site. They weren't cheap but look like new so I have now got a spare one. If you can only get one other I could be persuaded to part with it (at cost) 104aB's are well worth fixing.
