One of my family members obtained a couple of IMF ALS40 loudspeakers on "Freecycle" for er, well, um, free!
As you can see the upper bass drivers have been replaced by totally inappropriate drivers by a "Professional Firm!"

Link: http://tinyurl.com/bpjr6ay

As might be expected they sound wrong and the bass can best be described as “Quacky”.
I know that there were a few variants of these and I hope to try and use a driver with a lower fs.

Obviously with little information on the internet and not having access to the originals or even the Thiele Small parameters I’ll be working in the dark. Anybody got any ideas out there?

Please look here:

http://www.imf-electronics.com/Home/imf/speaker-range/studios/als40

Although they say "Tweeter : unknown; medium : unknown, bass: unknown", there is some info you might find useful.

Another place to look at:

All I could find was the Super Compact 2 which used an "IMF 200mm ribbed cone bextrene driver" and another "IMF 100mm bextrene cone type" and the Audax 25mm tweeter.
The Compact Monitor 3 also had a bextrene 200mm bass and bextrene 100mm mid, and the HPCM also had a "100mm bextrene unit".
So I'm guessing that the drivers were IMFs own, to show they did not have to buy from Kef!!

Unless I am mistaken there were a few variants as well, what I really need are the "Thiele / Small Parameters".

It now sems that in some versions the upper bass unit was the
Audax HD20B25J and the lower one the KEF SP1014.

Indeed IMF also used their own drivers as well, confusing as one can assume that both MKI as well as MKII may have used different drivers during their production runs.

Just updated the pictures. The tweeter is not the original Peerless.
The lower bass driver I guess is an early Peerless as used by B&O and Sonab etc... Whilst the 2nd replacement is better than the 'Sound Lab' unit we are still seeking an original whatever it was! Smile
Notes and explanations are under the pictures.

Yes, there is a nylon raw plug type rod to centre the extra bit which is aluminium. I'll post picture later tonight. Smile

Not much help with the base drivers, but the mids and tops are the same as what was in a early pair of TLS50 i used to have. Their was no identity on the mids, but Colin informed me that they where Elac, and the tops where Audax.

Thank you, I suspected Elac.
Tracing the original Bass units is proving difficult.
Finding the parameters (Thiel / Small) would help a lot.
