There is somebody selling some Cambridge Audio R50's on ebay which I quite fancy, £399 BIN price. He says they're in VGC and indeed they look to be.

He also says he's replaced the crossovers with better quality ones that are bi-wires too. However, when I contacted him about the crossovers he says "as far as i know" these were done by a specialist company.

Does anybody know of a specialist company making bi-wirable crossovers for these or do you think its a bit of DIYing ?

I guess it's a DIY project.
There is a cambridge audio group at google, there is a lot to find about R50's etc.

Thanks TL, I found an upgrade here http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/r50-upgrade-crossovers-481-p.asp

Trouble is, now a pair of TDL Monitors has come up about the same price. anybody any thoughts on which is the better speaker ?

First time i see these Xovers, never knew there was a bi-wire version.
Which type are the TDL's? I myself is very satisfied with th R50/TL 200's.
I cannot advise you about the TDL's since i never heard them.
Did you know that TL 200 are R50's with a modified Xover so they can handle 50 watts rms in stead of 25 w.?

The TDL monitors seem very similar to the R50 but use an elac bass .... there are some very poitive comments being made about the TDL's......yes I gathered the R50's were the same/similar as the TL200's

They do look the same (a bit). But the transmisionline (the pipe) is different so they may have another bass response. The rest of the speakers don"t look Kef to me, R50's have a B139, B110, T27 and a Coles supertweeter.

Yes your right, they're not Kef units. Some great things people say about them (TDL Monitors) but just read the 'Hi Fi Anwsers' review which was overall favourable but did mention they could be slightly bright and/or woolly with some equipment.....

How do your R50's/TL200's sound ?

Well it is indeed depending on the rest of the equipment how it finally sounds.
I am using Thorens TD160 turntable with ortofon needle, a Harman Kardon cd-player and a Cyrus two amp with PSX power supply wich delivers about 70 watts per channel at 8 ohms and lots of reserves.
The cyrus sounds very musically with great rythm and pace. I think it's a nice combination with my speakers.
I think the Cambridges do sound straight, i mean not putting forward certain frequencies. To me they sound "British", warm, no harshnes in the upper regions, silky maybe. Deep bass but not booming (if placed right) and beautifull voices and mids because of the B110 with his own transmissionline (in seperate housing).
