I've just bought a pair of Feb 1973 Chorales, the cabinets have previously been re-varnished and now need doing again but all the rest was as original.

I plan to re-furbish them for re-sale to a KEF/Vintage enthusiast. With this in view, what is best for the baffle in your opinion. Leave as original or repaint it and the B200 black as in photoshop'd pic?

I've hard-wired direct to the crossover through a small grommeted hole above the intact original terminals and plan to re-cap with 5% Alcaps and ugrade the wire to the B200 but will leave it's original red and black wires packed inside the cabinet or even leave them attached.

I'm also going to strip, oil and re-varnish the cabinets in a lighter shade than shown in pics.

Your opinions are welcomed.

I would not paint the B200's, as i think the solvents in the paint might damage the surroundings. If you want them without the fabric-fronts ican understand you'd like them black, just be carefull with the paint you use.
Did you make new speakerwire connectors above the old ones? Why leave the B200 wires intact if you want to upgrade? Do you want to add new ones parallel to the old ones?

Very good point about solvent paints. Maybe a water based paint might be safe as long as it doesn't touch the surround? I agree the B200 looks more impressive when black.

I tested the over-spill rubber based glue used to fix the rubber surrounds to the metal frame with cellulose thinners and only prolonged rubbing removed the glue, so now he B200's are now painted black with Hammerite Satin Finish.....pics to follow

If they look good, I might try it.

Does the paint not block or muffle the sound?

Only the chassis has to be painted. Don't touch the cones.

The tricky bit is painting a perfectly straight edge on the rubber surround .....

Shocked

Did you actually paint any of the rubber? It is difficult to see from the picture, but looks like a line is on the roll. I would personally not have touched the rubber for long term safety to be ultra cautious.

Hi

I too have just purchased a pair of Chorale's and assuming the drivers are OK would you leave the rest as is, or look at replacing the caps on the xover with alternatives. Does the T27 use ferrofluid and is rubber rot an issue with the B200 ?

I collect the speakers next Sunday.

Most on here are more qualified than me to answer but I would deffo recap the crossovers and the T27s are not ferrofluid cooled.

The B200's rubbers do not rot but some lose their shape and elasticity or develop splits and AFAIK exact replacements are not available. (Does anyone know why not?)

Did you buy your Chorales on Ebay last night for £50? If so I was the other bidder!

I never painted the rubbers, I simply ran a black permanent marker ink pen around the rubbers to get such a straight edge! Dries in seconds and works a treat!
