Cabinets have been dyed and then received two coats of clear. I will wet sandblock, then apply two much coats of clear. After sandblock, all the highlights will go away.

I temporarely fitted the heads just for testing. I will then remove the drivers and sandblock the cabinets to remove the orange peel and lay two more coats of clear. The colour is indeed very bright. I like it...

Little update of an ever going project. I have been using the custom bass cabinets as subs with the help of a Behringer CX3400 active crossover. They are fed by an ADCOM 5500 power amp. I have ordered some more XLR cables, and will soon tri-amp the bass cabinets and spare 105/2 heads with two Quad 405s and the ADCOM while the main speakers will be powered by a souped-up quad 606. Main speakers remain the original 105/2s for now. I have four B300B that will be used as four subs in the room's corners. It seems that crossing over the subs at 50-60Hz works well for getting a more physical sound. My basement has concrete floors with thin carpet. So, it does absorb a lot of the bass. The wide sofa is located right in front of the subs.

Thanks for the good word. The most particular event in this whole experience is that since I have the crossover and the subs, I don't use my equalizer anymore. In my basement, all the original 105/2s needed was a bit of bottom end. Then the mids don't sound too upfront anymore and I don't have any tone control on the preamp. Everything is set to flat, except for the extra sub 60Hz reinforcement. I am sure that if I moved the 105/2s to another room they would sound completely different, not needing subs anymore.

I wish I could afford a Quad 520f, but for now the 606 will do the job for that little extra punch over the modded 405. I found the 606 to be faster and more lively than the 405.

Currently listening to the Soundtrack from Dennis Hopper's "Hot Spot". The only recording with Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker, with the help from Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder.

Interesting... when I had my KEF 104aBs the bass in my living room was dire, no matter what I tied with placement and positioning.
My floor is wooden suspended.

I once took my system to a friend’s with a similar sized room but concrete floor. Miraculously the bass reappeared with form, finesse and surprising extension.

Once back home it was back to low and poor quality bass.
I even once blamed the ceiling! The poor 104s just could not get their act together here at all. I even tried numerous stands and height above floor with usual attention paid to near walls and room corners.

One short update. Active crossovers and multi-amping is a totally different planet from the old style passive crossovers.
