Hello everyone,

I've been looking to get a pair of 104/2 for a long a time, and I think I may have found a good pair. The owner has had them since new, and never done anything to them. I plan on replacing the ferrofluid and speaker foam if all goes well.

My only concern is the B200 woofer looks slightly strange to me, because the material on the surround appears to be different from the donut in the middle. Have these been repaired already? I've seen speakguru say that the 104/2 never had rubber surrounds so this seems odd (http://www.hifiloudspeakers.info/speakertalk/viewtopic.php?t=1363).

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

Theo

You've quoted me inaccurately. I said I didn't recall it. My memory is not perfect! I think there were a lot of complaints about rotting surrounds from the Far East and some later model may have been made with rubber surrounds.

Sorry speakerguru. These are from a UK set. Do you think the material is different in this case judging by the picture? I'm just curious as I'd like to get my hands on an as original set as possible.

My old pair of Raymond Cooke special edition 104/2 which are still in the family still have the original foam surrounds.
These are checked regularly and are intact, however earlier this year I noticed that the foam is starting to feel rather tacky or sticky...
The last time I observed this was on my Tannoy Ardens. A couple months later the foam disintegrated and had to be replaced.

Very difficult to tell from your photo, although I would have expected the surround to look more like the doughnut if they were both foam. If you feel with your finger there is no mistaking rough foam vs. smooth rubber.

The 104/2s I had had rubber surrounds on the B200s. I've seen this in all early production units. They switched to foam around the same time they changed the crossover arrangement.
