That is rather scary, I was aware of old phono cartridges sounding bad for the same reasons but this is a revelation indeed!
I'll speak to my resident chemist regarding long term effects of glycerol on butyl rubber. Colin would have had the answer by now...

Derek Hughes, designer of Spendor speakers after Spencer, has used brake fluid on surrounds of specific speakers he designed years ago and shown results on the Yahoo Spendor forum. The exact fluid required depended on the material of the original surround (early Spendors did not have a problem) but SOME later polypropylene driver surrounds hardened over time. The painting of the surrounds significantly decreased the resonant freq of the driver, bringing it back much closer to spec and improving subjective results considerably. Long term results remain to be seen and reported but it looks worthwhile so far. Again the exact fluid (eg Dot 3 or 4) must be compatible with the exact material of the surround so this information is paramount. Brake fluid is designed to keep rubber pipes supple and prevent hardening and cracking so the idea is not at all out of hand.
