The previous issue of that booklet had reviews of the 104aB and 103 by Angus McKenzie I think. Angus came from an engineering background and did feature a lot of objective data; Martin Collums slightly less so. Later the hi-fi press seemed to go completely subjective; a lot easier and requires no equipment . |

and CHEAPER.
Any ex-Curry's salesman could set himself up as a reviewer in Haymarket rags without knowing anything about the equipment - just listen to a couple of disks and write 2 pages of waffle.
I still have all those early Choices. Angus actually contributed to eg the Quad 405.2 by pointing out the real world current limiting to Peter Walker of the 405 with real (perhaps badly designed) crossovers, and led to Spencer Hughes adding a resistor to the Spendor BC3 crossover to tame a low impedance dip. I highly suspect his criticism of the T27 in previous comparison reviews in Hi Fi For Pleasure (before he started the Choice books) eventually led to the aB circuit since Raymond Cooke/Laurie Fincham recognised the original 104 did not match the treble of the Spendor BC1.
Look at the mags that are left and their circulation - totally insignificant. The worst aspects of subjectivism drove high quality audio into a ghetto as far as mass market appeal was concerned, unable to compete against other technologies that came along to mop up disposable income since so many magazines were just hype and unbelievable hyperbole.

Yes, yet again the lowest common denominator triumphs...
The American Audiophile magazine still tests equipment by measuring and listening. Here is a review of the KEF 107 in 1991 for example.
