So I think I'd like to give a Quad 306 or 606 power amp a go some time as a upgrade from my flaky integrated but not sure what pre-amp would be best suited to go with them.

It seems the Quad pre-amps especially the early ones get quite a bad rep but I'm not sure if that's justified. Especially if they only get poo pooed from those Russ Andrews snake oil type sales people who failed science at school.

The Quad 34 looks like a good companion to the 306 and 606 but not sure hence this post also how will it handle the hot outputs of modern CD players? Arcam CD players line out is 2.2v RMS for example.

I don't want the pre-amp to add anything to the sound or as little as possible, don't care for tone controls either.

Budget? As little as possible really...

I was also looking at more modern integrated amps but again not sure.
A lot use SMT components now days which I can't replace at home if stuff goes wrong, schematics are scarce for a lot of these and tech support is always pretty piss poor with discontinued products from experience (Depending on the company of course)

Actually scrap that what's stopping me making a passive volume control for the quads...

A 1u box, I can even cut the face panel out at work on the CNC then fit a decent quality input select rotary switch and something like a ALPS RK-40 or RK27 volume pot.
Shame I used all the RK-40's I had on my last project, I think they are quite pricey now

Is the output on the Quad pre-amps inverted?
