|
|
The Linn Isobarik had 6 drive units in each speaker including 2 of B139 and 2 of B110. My question is: Were the B139 drive units SP1044 (330mm X 210mm) and were the B110 drive units SP1003 (140mm diameter) or SP1057?
I have being doing a bit of investigation and the official Linn documentation for the Isobarik merely says B139(modified). The B139 SP1044 as far as I know came in two varieties. The B139 SP1044 was quoted as weighing 3.6kg weight; power rating 50 watts; resonant frequency 23Hz; voice coil diameter 50.8mm. The B139B SP1044 was quoted as weighing 3.85kg; power rating 100 watts; resonant frequency 25Hz; voice coil diameter 55mm. I have only listed the specs where differences are quoted.
I suspect that the B139B SP1044 was used in the Isobariks but I don't know with certainty. The B139B might be what Linn calls a 'modified' B139. On the other hand perhaps Linn modified the B139 it in some minor way.
The B139B SP1044 was also used in:
a KEF Horn DIY speaker system along with B110A SP1003 and T27A SP1032.
a KEF Constructor Series Model CS7 along with B110B SP1057 and T33A SP1074
If anyone can post any further information I will be most grateful.
I did try to extract some documentation from Linn about a year ago and I was sent some documentation but it was not detailed with respect to drive units. |

Sp1044 B139 was used 2 in tandem
Sp1003 B110 mid
ScanSpeak 19mm Soft dome
Passive with optinal Active
In those days LINN had no real skills at crossover design relying on trial and error so the results are somewhat polarizing you love them or hate them.

My understanding from a recent post on another Forum is that Falcon Acoustics designed and built the Isobarik crossovers.
I would really like to find out more about the Isobariks but it would appear that there is very little information available. Can anyone offer any links to resources?

A great many years ago a pair of Linn Isobariks were found in the rafters of NAIM Audio in Salisbury.
I was even more broke then, but these were offered to me for £100.
By the time I raised the cash they went for somewhat less to a spotty employed Herbert in the factory. Boy was I upset!
Of what I saw of them, and conversations we had, seems that Linn were quite keen on modifying units in general.
It is a sad loss that so little information escaped forom the Linn factory in the 1st instance!

Hmm, bass that went down forever.
The Mid & Top easily sorted to be civilised.
At a mere £100 certainly not worth the Anglo Saxon coment!
This is a Hi-Fi forum.
Still reget the lost purchase...

Reality is the linn Isobarik is a dreadfull speaker Ivor had no idea but then he found Paul Messinger the worst audio Journo and Pal of Naim Julian Vereker the trio the 3 got together and so Linn / Naim was big deal.
