Greetings One And All. I sincerely hope all our members and contributors around the world are well and healthy. Very Trying Times indeed.

I've been absent for some time now. I'm sure I'll have o ton of interesting reading here waiting for me. .

I have been fortunate to be granted a superbly well looked after pair of 1 owner KEF 104aB's. In early pair I assume, sporting grey connecting terminals rather the more common black ones that I believe came later. (Can anyone confirm this assumption to be correct?).
This set appears to have had the T-27's replaced during their lifetime. The owner said he recalled one being "upgraded" in the past and this is evident since it sported a protective screen ala LS3/5a !
But there's more mystery here. I note that both T-27's have black wires to the voice coil. not the usual Blue / Black. Doubly interesting is these tweeters have no markings whatsoever on the rear, no date codes, not even a model number. There is only a small green sticker with the letter E imposed.
I recall reading somewhere that black wired T-27's indicate a very high degree of specification adherence and were used especially in LS3/5a's. Is it possible these a special version of the tweeter?

Can anyone shed light on this anomaly?

I should add to the post that these tweeters sound very good indeed. I have not done a DATS scan, but neither am I in any hurry.
The speakers both look and sound better any of the many pairs I've previously owned or worked on for people.

No. Production just stopped painting the part of the blue wire, that was visible from the front, black at some stage.

I had some of the first 104s (later worthwhile crossover upgraded when aBs came out) and they had the grey plastic insert with just 4mm sockets.

Didn’t they have a DIN speaker socket between the 4mm banana sockets too?

Yes, dead right, forgotten about DIN speaker sockets! Soldering heavy duty cable into a DIN speaker plug was fun. All those amp amps within a mm of each other Smile
