Huh! I still have one of those in storage!
I might end up selling it on eBay, too. I have four TT's and room for only one... _________________ Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, "Where have I gone wrong?" Then a voice says to me, "This is going to take more than one night."

Well I'll take into consideration the MC10- frankly speaking, I have no experience at all with MCs, but trials tend to be expensive... Then I have to consider to upgrade the ampli and spekear sections.
I thank you for the advices and let me wish you all the best for this holiday season and the upcoming new year!
Cheers from Italy |

Hi All!!!
Did anyone mentioned Vinyl????
Some weeks ago I saved a Thorens TD 145 MK II from the barn of my neighbour.. He really didn't have a clue what it was, so he gave it to me. I did not know Thorens as well, but only a few hours later I was basically given the keys of a nice Mercedes so to say....
Anyway, some repair work needed to be done. I took it to this HIFI specialist who did a great job on it, and the only thing I found out when coming home is this buzz noise that is clearly no good. The cartridge is a Stanton 681EEE, with a new needle in it. I'm not sure about the cartridge whether or not he's ok, maybe I'll update that one with the triple E Mark III...
I take it for granted for now as my amp (Technics TU 7200) is about 30 years old as well, and is due to replacement. The phono connection might be down, but I'm not sure of that. I have my mind set to a Marantz PM 7200 KI signature. Maybe a little overdone, but it has to be good given the speakers that will be connected to it. (KEF Cresta original late 60's)
I really hope I don't have to take the Thorens back again, it would be a relief for me to know that it is indeed my amplifier..
Shine a little light here please anyone??
Love,
Jasper |

It sounds like the TT is not grounded.
You must ground the turntable to the receiver or preamp (depending on what you have). There should be a grounding screw on the receiver / preamp.
The table should have three wires coming out of it. Two RCA plugs for Right and Left and a third bare wire (sometimes there is a spade attached to the wire). That wire is the ground plug.
Let us know what happens!
Gary

Gary..
You're my man today!!!!!
Usually I never trusted myself on unscrewing a record player or amplifier, but this time I just thought oh well, why not? What can happen after all??
Here's what I did: I noticed that the Thorens did not have three wires, but two. One wire for power, the other with the RCA plugs. So, no ground wire.
I decided to fix one myself. I opened the bottom plate, and found this connecting wire, screwed from one metal part of the chassis to another. This had to be the ground wire, and possibly the one I could use. So I screwed a single piece of loudspeaker wire to the chassis, and lead it out of the TT just like the power wire and signal wire. I connected the other end to the ground screw on the amp and voila!!!!!!! How proud can one be of himself huh?? Hahaha... I'm so lucky on this one..
Only sad thing is that I have to come up with another reason to convince my wife for getting a new Marantz Amp... Hmmmm.....
Gary, thank you so much!
Love,
Jasper |

You're quite welcome!
That was pretty brilliant on your part, devising a ground wire like that! Congratulations!
Actually, try to find separates or something (presuming you were referring to a Marantz receiver, not an amp). I've never heard a receiver that sounded as good as a preamp and amp combination.
And there is your reason for upgrading!
Good luck! _________________ Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, "Where have I gone wrong?" Then a voice says to me, "This is going to take more than one night."

Thanks Gary!
Actually I did refer to an amp, and what amp that is! Basically it is an analog amp, but all up to this date.. Here's a link:
http://www.marantz.com/new/index.cfm?fuseaction=Products.Product&cont=eu&bus=hf&prod_id=2401
There's also a KI version of this amp, wich has a copper plated chassis and back plate.. I just love that one! It has by far too much power for my Cresta's, but it is worth to treat it gently!
Love,
Jasper. |

Wow, I had no idea that Marantz was so sweet!
I hope you can listen to it somewhere (with your own CDs of course) before you buy it!

Thanks Harry
I missed that one. Normally I manage to delete or edit content before others see it. It is a bit of a battle sometimes! _________________ Forum Manager |

Huh, I used to call my Zero 100 "Rumblemaster".
Changing the plinth to a decent wooden one helped a little.
After graduating to a Thorens TD 125 all was well with the world. |

Too true,
In my opinion, upgrades to your source will have more impact than any upgrades down the line, in particular T/Ts respond very well to careful set up and some well executed tweaks. And of course, absolute hygiene is a must. |
